5 Nonprofits We Love

We believe that nonprofits and other social enterprises are essential components of our world, as they advocate for the common good and provide for those that society often overlooks. As such, we wanted to give recognition to 5 non-profit organizations that are doing amazing work!

1 ) Seven Women

Stephanie Woollard began Seven Women at age 22 after meeting seven disabled women working in a tin shed in Kathmandu. These seven women were struggling to make a living in the face of harsh discrimination. With her last $200, Steph paid for a trainer to teach the women how to produce products for sale locally and abroad - and Seven Women was born. In 12 years, over 5,000 women have been educated, trained and employed by Seven Women.

2 ) CRIS

Community Refugee & Immigration Services (CRIS) is an independent non-profit organization that serves the growing refugee and immigrant populations in Central Ohio. They have over 60 staff members that hail from more than 15 countries. CRIS is a refugee resettlement agency, meaning they have a contract with the Department of State to directly receive and place refugees in their community in Ohio.

3) International Samaritan

International Samaritan is a nonprofit dedicated to raising the standard of living in garbage dump communities. For 25 years, they have worked to change the lives of the most vulnerable people in the world through hands-on service and advocacy work. They meet basic needs, bolster community initiatives, provide medical aid, and support education for people in Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Ethiopia.

4 ) Charity: Water

Diseases from dirty water kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. 43% of those deaths are children under five years old. Access to clean water and basic sanitation can save around 16,000 lives every week. 1 in 10 people lack access to clean water. Confronted by this harsh reality, Charity: Water is on a mission to change all of these stats. Founded by Scott Harrison in 2006, the non-profit has funded 38,113 water projects for 9.6 million people around the world, and they are still at it.

5 ) The Akumanyi Foundation

The Akumanyi Foundation was founded by Hannah Bonacci and Francis Akumanyi.  They have developed an organization that empowers youth and women through a process grounded in establishing and cultivating long-term relationships, sustainability, cultural humility, and local ownership. They work internationally to improve the lives and the living conditions of vulnerable youth and women through building collaborative relationships that inspire economic development initiatives and cultivate global citizenship with the goal of achieving self-sustainability for the individuals that they serve.

These organizations hold values that align with ours. At Aatmiya, we believe in empowering women by providing dignified, skill based jobs. A big thanks to these organizations and all the work they are doing to make our world a better place. We hope to drive impact in the same way that you do!
