Manu is a 46-year-old single mother living in Bhaktapur with her 17-year-old daughter. She and her father migrated from the remote village of Dolakha, Nepal to the capital of Nepal, Katmandu.
Manu's determination to learn and her passion for knitting amazes us. She says she has never received any formal training. When she was a teenager, she used to graze cattle in her village. She did not have enough money to buy knitting needles so she decided to trim and shave bamboo sticks to make needles.
Despite her limited financial background, she is independently providing for her daughter to attend CMA training, which is required for her to work at the local Health Post. Manu’s dream is to enroll her daughter in a nursing program so that she too can become financially independent.
She joined Aatmiya seven years ago which was her first formal employment. She not only wants to learn new techniques for herself, but she also wishes to return to her village in Dolakha to teach underprivileged women knitting.
Besides knitting and crocheting, she loves to cook and says if given all the resources, she could cook any food!
